Govt P-16116: American Grand Strategy

Semester: Summer
|
Year offered: 2024

This course introduces students to the theory and practice of American grand strategy. We will cultivate the knowledge and skills to engage in a series of grand strategic debates, including what role the United States should play in the world, what foreign policy instruments most effectively advance U.S. national interests, and what the biggest challenges the United States faces today. Should the United States “lead from behind” or lead from up ahead? Is the “liberal international order” truly liberal? Do alliances deter wars or start them? Why are U.S.-Russia and U.S.-China relations so adversarial today, and can anything be done to manage these tensions?
